Born into the San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico, Maria’s legacy is closely tied to her innovative approach to an ancient art form that was nearly lost to time.

Maria’s artistic journey began in her youth, learning the intricacies of pottery from her aunt, and she quickly became fascinated by the methods passed down through generations. What set Maria apart, however, was her ability to blend traditional Pueblo styles with innovative techniques that would later redefine the craft. Her most famous contribution was the development of the “black-on-black” pottery style, a method she perfected alongside her husband, Julian Martinez, in the 1920s. The process involved shaping the clay by hand, using a coil method, then burnishing the surface to a smooth finish before firing the pieces in a special pit fire. The striking black color came from a unique combination of materials and careful control of the fire’s oxygen levels.
