Abraham Begay

Abraham Begay is a highly respected Navajo (Diné) silversmith renowned for his innovative, contemporary approach to traditional jewelry making. Active since the late 20th century, Begay is particularly celebrated for his flawless channel inlay techniques and his bold use of modernist, geometric forms.

Rather than relying on classic traditional stamping or large cabochon settings, Begay’s signature style involves constructing complex, architectural silver frames—often utilizing asymmetrical or interlocking shapes—and filling them with tightly fitted, multicolored stones. His pieces often feature a striking contrast of lapis, turquoise, coral, jet, and vibrant shells like spiny oyster or gaspeite. Today, his vintage modernist pieces are highly sought after by collectors who appreciate Southwestern jewelry that doubles as contemporary fine art.
