Barbarita Naranjo (1917–1984) was a renowned potter from the Santa Clara Pueblo, known for her carved and painted pottery. She was the daughter of Pasquelita Tafoya, a noted potter, and a niece of Sara Fina Tafoya, both influential figures in the Pueblo pottery tradition. Barbarita was part of a family of skilled artisans, including Cresencia Tafoya, Gloria Garcia, Minnie Vigil, and Lois Gutierrez. Her daughters, Veronica Naranjo and Mary Scarborough, also continue the family’s pottery-making tradition. Barbarita’s work often featured intricate carving and painted designs, showcasing the deep blackware pottery typical of Santa Clara Pueblo. Her pieces blended traditional techniques with personal artistry, contributing to the continuation of the Pueblo’s rich pottery heritage. Barbarita’s legacy lives on through her family and the lasting impact of her unique pottery style.
