Laura Lon Jose

Laura Lon Jose is a recognized Zuni Pueblo potter known for her dedication to the time-honored methods of hand-coiled ceramics. Like many historic and early-to-mid 20th-century Zuni ceramicists, she learned the demanding, labor-intensive process of hand-gathering local clay, coiling, and natural pigment painting through familial teachings, ensuring that ancestral knowledge was preserved and carried forward.

Working exclusively with native clays and traditional mineral slips, her art exemplifies the classic Zuni style. Her pieces are characterized by beautifully smoothed surfaces and expertly painted polychrome designs that often incorporate the complex, fine-line geometric and animal motifs central to Zuni heritage. Authentic, hand-fired works by Laura Lon Jose are cherished by collectors who appreciate the enduring charm and profound cultural history of traditional Native American pottery.
