Robert Patricio

Robert Patricio, also known by his given name “Bear,” was born into Acoma Pueblo in June 1976. At the age of eight, he began learning the traditional methods of hand-coiling pottery from his great-grandmother, the esteemed Marie Z. Chino. Today, Robert is known for his expertise in hand-coiled, hand-painted pottery, which reflects both his deep respect for tradition and his personal artistic vision.

His process begins by collecting various clays, slips, and natural vegetation for the colors he uses. He starts by cleaning the clay to remove impurities, then mixes it with water to create the perfect consistency. Using snake-like coils, Robert constructs his vessels, which are left to air dry. Once dry enough, he sands the pieces to achieve a smooth finish. While the pottery is curing, he boils natural vegetation, such as wild spinach and flowers, to extract the pigments for coloring. After carefully applying intricate designs and colors to his pots, Robert fires them, completing each piece with precision and artistry. His work is highly regarded for its beauty and cultural significance, continuing the legacy of Acoma pottery while adding his unique touch.
