Teresita Tafoya Naranjo

Teresita Tafoya Naranjo (Apple Blossom) (1919–1999) was a renowned potter from Santa Clara Pueblo, celebrated as one of the finest artists of the 20th century. Born into a family of potters, Teresita was the daughter of Victor and Christina Naranjo and granddaughter of the esteemed Serafina Tafoya. She learned the craft from her mother and grandmother, becoming known for her intricate black and red pottery, often featuring traditional carvings like the bear paw motif. Her work exemplified the Santa Clara style and gained wide recognition for its precision and elegance.

Teresita married Joe Naranjo in 1940, and they had one daughter, Stella Tafoya Chavarria. After Joe’s death in 1950, Teresita supported her family through the sale of her pottery, earning a reputation as both a talented artist and a determined single mother. Her pieces were widely exhibited and collected, winning numerous awards at prestigious events such as the Santa Fe Indian Market.

A beloved mentor, Teresita passed down her craft to future generations, including her daughter and niece, Margaret Tafoya. Teresita’s legacy endures in her beautifully crafted pottery, which remains a cornerstone of Santa Clara Pueblo’s artistic heritage.
