Description

Traditional handmade Native American Indian Pottery from Indigenous Pueblos of the Southwest. Guaranteed authentic. Excellent vintage condition.

Experience the mesmerizing complexity of traditional Pueblo ceramics with this vintage Acoma geometric bowl by acclaimed potter John Aragon. Known as “Sky City,” Acoma Pueblo is famous for producing some of the thinnest, most delicate, and technically demanding pottery in the world. This beautifully rounded, open-top bowl serves as a perfect canvas for Aragon’s incredible brushwork. The vessel is enveloped in a striking, high-contrast black and white optical design, featuring painstakingly painted fine lines, step motifs, and intricate geometric patterns that create a profound sense of movement and dimension across the curved surface.

True to the ancestral methods of his Pueblo, Aragon creates his pottery entirely by hand without the use of a potter’s wheel. The clay is locally gathered, hand-coiled, and meticulously smoothed before being coated in a bright white slip. The intricate black designs are then applied freehand using natural mineral pigments and a traditional brush—often crafted from the chewed end of a yucca frond. Fired using time-honored techniques, this vintage open bowl is more than a decorative object; it is a profound expression of Indigenous Southwestern heritage and a testament to the enduring legacy of Acoma artistic teachings.
