Description

Traditional handmade Native American Indian Pottery from Indigenous Pueblos of the Southwest. Guaranteed authentic. Excellent vintage condition.

Celebrate the vibrant, storytelling nature of Southwestern art with this delightful vintage hand-coiled jar from Jemez Pueblo. Crafted entirely by hand using ancient coiling methods and native clay gathered from the Jemez Valley, this wide-shouldered vessel is a beautiful representation of mid-to-late 20th-century Puebloan artistry. The jar is coated in a rich, warm terracotta-red slip, which is carefully polished to provide a vibrant, smooth backdrop for the meticulously painted design.

Sweeping around the body of the pot are multiple rhythmic bands of stylized lizards—a beloved motif in Southwestern art often associated with survival, agility, and conservation in the arid desert landscape. The lizards are painted freehand in a deep matte black with delicate white dot accents, giving the piece a lively, textured appearance. This lively pattern is perfectly anchored by a traditional geometric border encircling the rim. Fired outdoors to achieve its permanent, organic finish, this vintage piece carries the authentic warmth of true Jemez ceramics and makes a fantastic, conversation-starting collectible.

Pueblo

The art of Jemez Pottery making was revived in the 1800s after being lost during the Spanish conquest of the American Southwest. After being developed in the traditional style, the pottery has been enhanced over the generations to include several wonderful clay colors and traditional shapes. Jemez Pueblo Pottery has also been influenced by later generations by polishing and incising the pottery, fine line painting, inlaid stonework and storyteller figures.
