Description

Traditional handmade Native American Indian Pottery from Indigenous Pueblos of the Southwest. Guaranteed authentic.

Capture the profound spirit of ancient Southwestern and Mesoamerican artistry with this striking contemporary effigy olla by celebrated Laguna potter Michael Kanteena. An “olla” (a traditional rounded jar used for water storage) combined with an “effigy” (a vessel shaped or sculpted to represent an animal or human figure) creates a culturally rich, sculptural form. Kanteena is globally renowned for his ability to flawlessly recreate the aesthetics of ancient pre-Columbian, Chacoan, and Mimbres artifacts, bringing their mysterious and powerful presence into the modern era.

Formed entirely by hand using traditional coiling techniques and native clays, this vessel features beautifully integrated sculptural elements that emerge organically from the jar’s rounded body. What truly sets Kanteena’s work apart is his masterful surface treatment. Rather than a high-gloss modern polish, he expertly applies natural mineral slips and utilizes specialized firing techniques to create a matte, distressed patina. The resulting finish gives the piece the authentic, weathered appearance of a millennia-old artifact newly unearthed from an archaeological site. This effigy olla is a captivating, tactile piece that honors the deep ancestral roots of indigenous clay work.

About The Artist

While he was raised surrounded by the traditional pottery of his community, Kanteena pursued formal art education, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Eastern New Mexico University.
