Miriam Ortiz Davis, born December 3, 1952, is a renowned potter from the Laguna Pueblo, with clans of Big Badger and Little Roadrunner. She began making pottery around 1983, creating traditional polychrome jars and bowls. Miriam is the daughter of Mark Ortiz and Marie Yepa, both of whom influenced her artistic journey. Known for her elegant, hand-coiled vessels adorned with intricate geometric designs, she revitalized Laguna pottery traditions while blending contemporary elements. Miriam’s work is celebrated for its cultural significance, fine craftsmanship, and ability to connect the rich heritage of her tribe with modern artistic expressions.

Laguna is the largest Keresan-speaking Pueblo, with around eight thousand members. They prize thinking above all human attributes, consequently, they value intellectual activity and education. A scholarship program is conducted by the Pueblo, thus insuring advanced study for many of the young people, making them among the best educated of all Pueblos.
