About The Artist

Barbarita Naranjo (1917–1984) was a renowned potter from the Santa Clara Pueblo, known for her carved and painted pottery. She was the daughter of Pasquelita Tafoya, a noted potter, and a niece of Sara Fina Tafoya, both influential figures in the Pueblo pottery tradition. Barbarita was part of a family of skilled artisans, including Cresencia Tafoya, Gloria Garcia, Minnie Vigil, and Lois Gutierrez. Her daughters, Veronica Naranjo and Mary Scarborough, also continue the family’s pottery-making tradition.

Pueblo

The Santa Clara Pueblo is a member of the Eight Northern Pueblos, and the people are from the Tewa ethnic group of Native Americans who speak the Tewa language. The Pueblo is on the Rio Grande, between Ohkay Owingeh (formerly San Juan Pueblo) to the north and San Ildefonso Pueblo to the south. Santa Clara Pottery and its Pueblo are famous for producing hand-crafted pottery, specifically blackware and redware with deep engravings.
