Loretta Garcia was born into the Acoma Pueblo in 1956. She was inspired and encouraged to learn the art of pottery making by her mother, Marie Torivio. Marie taught Loretta all the fundamentals of pottery making, the traditional way, from start to finish. She was also economically motivated to make her pottery.
More About the ArtistAcoma Pueblo is situated on top of a mesa, hundreds of feet above the surrounding land. It commands a breathtaking view of the countryside, other mesas, and the distant mountains – no wonder it is called Sky City.
The thin-walled and delicately decorated pottery of Acoma Pottery is among the most prized Indian crafts.
